Brahms, Ein deutsches Requiem
Price, Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight
With the Fairfield County Chorale Orchestra
Brahms’ German Requiem is considered the crowning achievement of his career. His technique of composition in his amazing work brought critics to compare him with Bach and Beethoven. This towering work was likely inspired by the death of Brahms’ mother and that of his close friend, composer Robert Schumann. The Chorale will perform Brahms’ original composition.
Florence Price’s Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight is based on a 1914 poem by American poet, Vachel Lindsay. It portrays Abraham Lincoln walking through the streets of Springfield, Illinois, stirred from his eternal sleep. He is a man, who, even in death, is burdened by the tragedies of the modern world. Price’s luscious post-romantic writing and plea for peace in the face of WWI are a perfect companion to Brahms.
